1 pound (450 grams) ground beef (preferably 80% lean)
Salt and pepper, to taste
4 hamburger buns
4 slices of cheese (cheddar, American, or your choice)
Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato slices, onion slices, pickles, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise
Preheat your grill or stovetop skillet over medium-high heat.
Divide the ground beef into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, about 1/2 inch thick. Season both sides of the patties with salt and pepper.
Place the burger patties on the preheated grill or skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. If using a skillet, you may need to cook in batches depending on its size.
During the last minute of cooking, add a slice of cheese on top of each patty and allow it to melt.
While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the hamburger buns on the grill or in a toaster.
Once the patties are cooked and the cheese has melted, remove them from the heat and let them rest for a minute.
Assemble your burgers by placing a patty on the bottom half of each bun. Add any desired toppings such as lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise.
Top with the remaining half of the bun and serve immediately.
